The Secondary School MUSIC TEACHER is responsible for delivering high-quality music education to students aged 11–18, fostering creativity, musical skill, and an appreciation of music across a range of styles, traditions, and technologies. The role supports students’ academic progress, personal development, and engagement with the wider school community. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging music lessons in line with the national or school curriculum 
  • Teach a range of musical skills, including performance, composition, listening, and music theory 
  • Assess, monitor, and record student progress, providing constructive feedback 
  • Prepare students for examinations, performances, and assessments 
  • Manage classroom behaviour effectively to create a positive learning environment 
  • Organise and support extracurricular activities such as choirs, bands, ensembles, and school performances 
  • Use music technology and resources effectively, including notation software and recording tools 
  • Differentiate lessons to meet the needs of students of varying abilities and backgrounds 
  • Contribute to curriculum development and departmental planning 
  • Participate in school events, concerts, parents’ evenings, and professional development activities 
  • Uphold safeguarding, health and safety, and school policies at all times 

Person Specification 

Essential 

  • Qualified Teacher Status (or equivalent) 
  • Degree in Music or a related subject 
  • Strong knowledge of music theory, performance, and composition 
  • Ability to teach across Key Stages (or equivalent secondary levels) 
  • Excellent communication and classroom management skills 
  • Commitment to inclusive education and student wellbeing 

Desirable 

  • Ability to teach an instrument or vocal studies 
  • Experience preparing students for public examinations 
  • Experience leading extracurricular music activities 
  • Confidence using music technology and digital learning tools 

Skills and Attributes 

  • Passion for music education and youth development 
  • Creativity and enthusiasm in lesson delivery 
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills 
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a department and wider school team
